We built Yout with the idea that a legal stream format shifting tool (DVR) for the internet that was clean, easy, and not spammy needed to exist.
According to the EFF.org "The law is clear that simply providing the public with a tool for copying digital media does not give rise to copyright liability".
During 2014 Yout was researched and programmed by John Nader
Yout launched on Dec 5th, 2015, with a last bit of frontend help by Lou Alcala
Yout went to number one on ProductHunt on Dec 6th, 2015
Yout founder did an AMA on Reddit on Jan 9th, 2016
An unnamed engineer who wrote a one-off blog post about our specific issue, ported our code from python to golang; therefore fixing the scaling issue over a weekend, because ?. Did give Yout's code an 8.5 though.
Yout incorporated as Yout LLC on 15 May, 2017.
Yout reached on the now defunct alexa website ranking a worldwide ranking of 887 largest website in the world. The highest it had ever been on the website rankings in the world.
On October 25th, 2019 The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) sent a takedown notice to google, delisting Yout from the majority of search traffic around the world, featuring it in TorrentFreak and other news publications.
On October 25th, 2020 Yout filed suit against the RIAA for defamation
On February 15th, 2021, Yout receives a trademark from the USPTO for the term 'Yout' for 'Software as a service (SAAS) services featuring software for format-shifting.'
A bunch of things happen
On August 5th, 2021 the district court of Connecticut dismissed without prejudice Yout's complaint against the RIAA
On September 14th 2021 Yout filed a second amended complaint
That complaint was then later dismissed with prejudice by the Connecticut district court
After the district court made its ruling Yout filed a notice of appeal on Oct 20, 2022
With the appeal pending, RIAA filed a motion requesting $250,000 USD from Yout
Yout requested the motion to be stayed while the appeal is pending, the Connecticut district court dismissed without prejudice the RIAA's motion with a chance to refile after the appeal
Yout then filed its appeal on February 2nd, 2023
The EFF filed an amicus brief in Yout's favor.
Microsoft owned Github filed a neutral amicus brief, but then filed a blog post further explaining its stance
Yout's appeal was argued in front of the United States Second Circuit court of appeals
